I have been visiting the rural area Nant-Y-Moch quite often ever since my tutor first brought it’s existence to my attention. I find it a very inspiring environment that has something new to offer every time visit, whether that be the colour of the tress or the ever changing weather.
In September, my cousin and her family came to visit my family and we took them to Nant-Y-Moch as we thought it would be such a contrast to their familiar surroundings in New York.
Of course they were in awe of the sheer size of this place and my cousin’s husband decided to fly his drone over the roads and the dam to get some interesting footage.
I have recently been able to get a hold of the photos taken by his drone and I’ve included a few below.
Seeing the dam from a new perspective is so strange to me; it’s like looking at an entirely new place. The lines of the roads and shapes of the land are so abstracted from above.
I decided to create some small squares studies of these photos to see what I could find in terms of composition ideas. I chose to use a natural grey made from ultramarine blue and burnt umber for these so that I could focus on shape and tone, without getting caught up in colour palettes. Here is what I produced:
Although many of these paintings contain a thick horizontal stroke which creates a barrier in the composition, I think I could use them as a starting point for a series. I will need to work out how I can fix some of the compositional errors, but I am feeling inspired.
