Developing

I've decided to translate a few of the small interior studies I recently painted, onto 30 x 30 cm boards, so I started with the one I think is the most simple in terms of composition.

I've chosen to paint two of the same image alongside each other, so that there is more chance of producing a successful painting. On one of the boards, I have been working in a complimentary Cadmium Yellow and Deep Violet colour palette. And on the other, a complimentary Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber colour palette. I have mainly used the warm yellow and brown for the closer walls of the interior scene, to bring them forwards, and the cooler purple and blue colours for walls a little further away and the light seen through the window.

These are the two paintings as they are at the moment:

As you can see in the images, in the painting on the left I have used much rougher techniques, with palette knives and sprays of water. I prefer painting in this looser, more gestural style so I think I will move the other painting in that direction too as I continue to add layers.

I have used a painted edge of rulers and a catalyst wedge to create the angular lines and I think it's worked well in this case. I am definitely going to add more contrast to both paintings and maybe try to abstract them more, but I am happy with the simplicity of the composition and think they could become interesting paintings if I take my time with them.

I am also going to start another couple of paintings of one of the other interior studies, which will give me a bit of change and hopefully make me slow down on these two as I can be quite an impatient painter.
