Finally, after finding out the person who had the job role of Gallery Assistant at Aberystwyth Arts Centre was moving and so gave up his position here, I found the application form, got an interview, and then received a call saying I was successful in my application! I am so thankful for my position in the Arts Centre as it will be an amazing experience for me to take forward for a future career in the art industry. My job is to essentially guard the artwork on display in Gallery 1 which sounds intimidating but realistically consists of working on a laptop and greeting people whilst being available to answer questions and make sales. The current exhibition on display is The Printed Line, which is a selection of prints from the Arts Council Collection including works by Picasso, Matisse and Freud. It is a celebration of great artists and their ability to create precise and interesting lines through different printmaking techniques. I have included photos of the exhibition below. I am also sometimes responsible for opening and closing the gallery, locking doors and making sure lights and TVs are on/off. This job position allows me expand my knowledge of art through the works and books on display. And I often get the chance to do my own work on the laptop, meaning I do around 7-10 hours a week of artist research and website updating/blogging. This will not only help with my own learning, but it will also enable me stay on top of things for my MA. I am striving for success!
