The Light Series

I wanted to have a weekly breakthrough with my work and after a good discussion with my tutor, I decided that for this week, I should focus on portraying natural light in a landscape. To understand the way that sunlight falls on a landscape, I observed my local area (which is perfect for this scenario as I have a beach at my doorstep and mountains landscapes minutes away). I had 9 loose, watery paintings from when I let the paint lead me last week and so I decided to use these as bases for my light series. To get myself started on this series of paintings, I referred back to landscapes I had painted last semester and photos I had collected along the way, so I could loosely base my paintings on these. Whilst painting, I repeated phrases my tutor had said to me in my head; 'let the paint lead you', 'think about where the light would fall' and 'less is more'. Before I knew it, I had completed a painting I was very happy with. So i reflected on my painting, cleaned my water, and began a new one. I repeated this process 6 times and ended up with a set of paintings I was pleased with and felt had potential to move my project forward. This is the set of paintings I am calling The Light Series:
